Trump Indicted on Capitol Riot Charges
Former President Ordered to Appear in Court
Charges Stem from Special Counsel Investigation
Former President Donald Trump was indicted Tuesday on charges stemming from Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation into the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. Trump has been ordered to appear in federal court in Miami on Tuesday to face the charges.
The indictment is the culmination of a months-long investigation by Smith, who was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to lead the Justice Department's probe into the Capitol riot. The charges against Trump include inciting an insurrection, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to defraud the United States.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly claimed that the election was stolen from him. He has also criticized the investigation as a "witch hunt." Trump has been indicted four times in 2023 — including for his alleged role in the Capitol riot, for allegedly trying to interfere in the 2020 election in Georgia, and for his handling of classified documents.
