DeMar DeRozan to Join Sacramento Kings in Sign-and-Trade Deal

Lucrative Contract and Bulls Departure

Sacramento, Calif. - June 30, 2023 -

NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan has agreed to a three-year, $81.9 million contract with the Sacramento Kings in a sign-and-trade deal with the Chicago Bulls, according to multiple reports. The move comes as a surprise, as DeRozan had been a key player for the Bulls over the past three seasons.

The Kings are sending two second-round draft picks to the Bulls in exchange for DeRozan. The 33-year-old forward is a four-time All-Star and has averaged 20.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game over his 13-year career.

DeRozan's departure from Chicago comes after the Bulls agreed to sign Lonzo Williams to a five-year, $90 million contract on the eve of free agency. Williams is a 24-year-old point guard who averaged 11.3 points, 6.3 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per game for the Lakers last season.

The Bulls are expected to use the salary cap space created by DeRozan's departure to pursue other free agents, including Chicago native Jabari Smith Jr. Smith is a 20-year-old forward who is projected to be one of the top picks in the upcoming NBA Draft.

The Kings, meanwhile, are hoping that DeRozan can help them return to the playoffs after a 16-year absence. The Kings have not made the postseason since the 2005-06 season, when they were led by Mike Bibby, Ron Artest, and Chris Webber.
